2010 Qld State Canoe Sprint Championships - Report and Results

Congratulations to Team Currumbin who competed over the weekend at the Queensland Canoe Sprint Titles held at Quad Park, Kawana on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January 2010.

The Currumbin Creek Canoe Club Team bagged 122 medals at the Championships, including 68 Gold, 28 Silver and 26 Bronze (see full competitor details and results below).

The majority of the team travelled to the Sunny Coast on Friday and met at Quad Park, Kawana mid afternoon for a paddle on the course before checking into our accommodation at the Currimundi Lakes Active Recreation Centre which became our home away from home for 3 days during the event. The facilities at the Centre were fantastic as were the various meals, which included chicken, tomato and olive fettuccini, mixed salads, cereals, fruit, yogurt, scrambled eggs, bacon and tomato on toast, pancakes and maple syrup, coconut slice, juice and hot milo for super.

Air-conditioned rooms was a plus and along with the assistance from the many parents who attended including Colette Mitchell, Jenny Tobitt, Meredith Green, Steve and Karen McKitterick, Michael Tom, Glen Clark and Wes Ross who lent a hand and shared the load of shopping for provisions and providing fresh chicken and salad rolls, fresh fruit (watermelon, rockmelon, grapes and peaches - compliments of Rebecca Degnian's parents, Peter and Karen), cold water and sports drinks. With this sort of help, there was nothing left for our athletes to do other than eat, rest, sleep, stretch and focus on racing and performing at their best.

Saturday saw everyone rise at 5.30am for breakfast before arriving at the course at 7.00am for an early warm up. Racing then started at 8.00am in all 1000 meter events for K1, K2 and K4 and the days racing finished around 3.00pm with the long distance (LD) races over 2500 and 5000 meters. Exhausted after a long day of competition, we headed back to our base for some R&R, a swim at the beach. A stretch and yoga session from our resident guru John "Ghandi" Newton after dinner then resulted in a good nights sleep. Sunday was much the same, kicking off at 8.00am with the 500 meter events (K1, K2 and K4) and the 200 meter events events (K1 and K2) which are now a new Olympic event due to feature for the first time at the 2012 London Olympics.

Ken Wallace, our Club Olympic Champion also competed in the State Championships and had some encouraging words to say to our younger athletes. To watch him paddle and see the leg drive, hip movement, connection, body rotation and transfer of power onto the blade with every stroke is an awesome and inspiring sight that our young athletes need to study, understand, practice and replicate !!

Congratulations also go to some of our Club NTID (National Talent Identification) athletes who also posted times which qualify them for subsidy to attend the next Grand Prix Championships GP2 to be held at the SIRC Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, Sydney on the weekend of 14 and 15 February 2010. The Currumbin Creek Canoe Club Team that competed at the Championships, including our medal tally and results was .....

Congratulations also goes to those athletes who made the Queensland Team which was announced at the end of competition but is yet to appear on QC's website http://www.qld.canoe.org.au/

As the results show, our Club members are looking in good shape to produce further improvements and PB's at the Australian Championships to be held at the SIRC from the 11th to 14th of March 2010. Given that the 'Aussie' Titles are just over 8 weeks away, now is the time for all athletes to focus on quality training sessions in order to reap the rewards of many months spent training in the lead up to this major event for the year.

Thanks again to everyone who pitched in and helped make this such an enjoyable and successful event for our Club and all of its member competitors.
